Jean le pèlerin est venu là

courant au train de sa jeunesse.

A celui du quotidien, encore, toujours,

s'est émoussée la mémoire des jours

Envolé, endormi, étouffé, cet ancien temps

était en lui, le savait-il ? toujours présent.

As it lays a warm and reassuring cover round his shoulders.

In the distance, on the other side

A small child in its mother's arms, finger in mouth,

looks in surprise at a flock of noisy gulls.

John came here as a pilgrim in search of his youth

Daily life always dulling the memories of this full, lyrical, drowsy, former time.

Yet in him still, did he know it ?
